Search Engine Marketing - Link Building Strategies

Link building is a pretty important factor in any web marketing campaign. Here are a few things to keep in mind when building links to your site.

1. Submit to all major search engines and directories. This may seem basic, but trust me, many people still don’t know the basics. Make these sites your initial targets: Google, Yahoo (paid), MSN, bCentral (paid), DMOZ (Open Directory – Good luck, don’t hold your breath), Business.com (paid), GoGuides, JoeAnt, and Gimpsy. This should get you started with several solid inbound links.

2. Make sure to focus on building internal keyword based links. Once you start to get listed in the above referenced search engines and directories, this will work to increase your keyword targeted traffic. A great way to do this is to create content pages that you can link to from other pages within your site.

3. Do a search for your competitors and find out what sites they are listed on. This is key and will help you find specialty directories and sites geared towards your niche market.

4. Use Press Releases and Articles effectively. Make sure your press releases have a link to your site; this is best done by creating a signature or “about” footer with your URL. For articles, make sure they are original, informative, and relevant and make sure you use a signature footer with your URL.

5. Don’t give up. You will want to invest some time every month to increasing your sites inbound and internal links. If you are launching a new site, you will need to devote considerable time to link building, and also you will need to exercise patience as it will take a few months to see the effects of each link. Make sure to maximize secondary search portals as well. Some are very inexpensive but are good sources of inbound links such as Linkopedia or SiteSnoop, and others are just not worth the money (I wouldn’t pay much for a not well known directory). Ultimately, you will see the evidence of an effective linking campaign in the form of an increasing Google Page Rank.

Happy Linking!
